seen in exposures to either pollutant alone. Thus, the screening test may be useful in detecting synergistic effects of combined pollutants. A swiunary of the lavage fluid profiles found with each type of lung injury is shown in Table 2. The use of lung washings to detect lung injury shows a potential as a rapid screening tool to assay for acute inflammatory response in the lungs of experimental animals. Such a screen can be used to rank airborne atmospheric pollutants according to their in vivo cytotoxicity and to choose those that require in-depth study. Analysis of lavage fluid could also be used to detect developing chronic pulmonary pathology if sensitive and specific indicators can be determined.

THE ROLE OF ALVEOLAR MACROPHAGES IN THE PRODUCTION OF COLONY –STIMULATING FACTOR BY THE LUNG
The role of alveolar macrophages in the production of granulocyte/ macrophage colony-stimulating factor(s) by the rat lung was investigated. Lavaged lungs, when incubated at proper weight per volume of culture medium, produced the same amount of colony-stimulating factor as unlavaged ones. Both lavaged and unlavaged lungs produced similar types of colony-stimulating factor (s). Prolonged i...
متن کاملHETEROGENEITY OF MACROPHAGE POPULATIONS: ANTIBODIES DETECTING VARIOUS POPULATIONS OF MACROPHAGES
Two groups of antibodies against mouse resident alveolar and peritoneal macrophages have been raised individually in rabbits by immunization with whole cell suspensions of lavaged alveolar and peritoneal macrophages. The whole antisera reacted positively with neutrophils and lymphocytes. However, upon extensive absorptions with these cells the activity became restricted to macrophages. The...
متن کاملPulmonary response to hyperoxia: effects of magnesium.
Animals and humans rapidly develop respiratory failure and die within a few days when exposed to 100% oxygen. Postmortem examination of the lungs shows histopathologic features characteristic of diffuse alveolar damage, clinically recognized as adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). At the present time, there is no effective therapy available to alter outcomes in ARDS. Importantly, hypomag...
متن کاملCHROMOSOMAL PROTEINS IN PULMONARY ALVEOLAR MACROPHAGES
In this study the nature of chromosomal proteins, his tones and nonhistone in resident alveolar macrophages was investigated in comparison to peritoneal neutrophils and calf thymus proteins. Cells were obtained by lavaging the lung and after purity determination they were subjected to fractional extraction procedures. Proteins were then analysed on SDS polyacrylamide gels and densitometric...
متن کاملBleomycin increases superoxide anion generation by pig peripheral alveolar macrophages.
Pulmonary fibrosis is the major toxic effect of bleomycin chemotherapy; however, the molecular mechanisms of the pathological process are unknown. Since alveolar macrophages produce toxic oxygen metabolites and these can damage lung cells, the effect of bleomycin on superoxide anion production was investigated in subpopulations of pig alveolar macrophages. Cells were lavaged from the lung and s...
